"The Stories We Tell Ourselves"
Nothing More is a (Mainstream) rock band, formed in 2003. In 2017, their song "Go To War" reached #1
on the Billboard Mainstream Rock (singles) chart. They have released 7 albums since 2004. Their recent album,
Carnal achieved the band's second #1 hit, "If It Didn't Hurt."
The short track "(Ambition : Destruction)" leads into "Do You Really Want It," having a hard-driving
Rock sound (Alternative); it was the second single of a total of four. The short, spoken voice "(Convict : Divide)"
leads into "Let 'Em Burn," another hard rock Alternative track (obviously). (Rock music website Loudwire
described this song as "as being a high energy song with 'forceful' drums, 'catchy beat', and vocals that start as a
'garbled guttural voice' before erupting into a full scream.") Similarily, the next track, "Ripping Me Apart"
chugging guitar line with lead vocalist Jonny Hawkins screaming the song's title over it. "Don't Stop" has nu
metal (hard rock, with elements of hip hop, funk, industrial and grunge) rhythms, with a more pop rock influenced chorus,
yet it fits the Alternative Rock style, just as the previous tracks. (Red Hot Chilli Peppers could be compared to this
track.) "Funny Little Creatures" keeps continuing the loud, hard rock Alternative.
The short track "(React : Respond)" leads into "The Great Divorce," having less of a the hard rock style,
and spoken words throughout. It has a quite moody atmosphere. "Still In Love" is stars moody, however it emerges
into another loud, hard rock Alternative track. "Still In Love" slows down the pace, and it kind of reminds me of
the song by XTC, "Making Plans For Nigel." It is still another hard rock track, Alternative styled. The short
track "(Alone : Together)" (a very pleasant sounding short track) leads into "Go To War," which was the band's
#1 Mainstream hit. "Just Say When" is a complete turnaround - more of a ballad, with vocals and acoustic guitar.
(A huge difference in sound). Another short track follows "(Accept - Disconnect)" (another pleasant sounding track,
sounding like Nirvana) leads into "Who We Are," returning to the harder rock Alternative. Likewise, "Tunnels"
is also another hard rock Alternative track. The short track "(End : Begin")" (the last one), leads into the album's
closing track, "FadeIn/FadeOut," which mixes both hard rock and less hard rock; more on the hard rock, of course.
The mix does work, and a good track to end the album.
Nothing More's The Stories We Tell Ourselves has a sound that is not for everyone. It's loud, hard rock,
Alternative. Yet, it's a style that is popular, in the "Mainstream Rock" category. (This is said about Rap. It's popular,
whether you like Rap, or Mainstream or not.) The Stories We Tell Ourselves lyrics were based on personal issues,
from lead vocalist Jonny Hawkins - social/political frustations regarding the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election, global
change, grief counseling (death of his mother), his recent divorce from his ex-wife. And on a positive note, strong
relationships between his band members. Again, it's loud, hard Rock, Alternative, for those who enjoy this genre of music.
